Yep. Stanchion base is for forward mast crutch.  It was kind of a Y-shaped stainless steel bracket that fit into the base, bolted secure, and then a long bolt went through the upper bracket and mast to hold the mast down in the bracket.  I think all of the Ventures came with them....

Greetings,
I bought my 1970 V24 a couple of years ago and yours already looks better than mine ;-).  Truth is, I had to finish a restoration of my 72 Fiat and it's now done.  So that means I start in earnest to see if she'll float.  My sail # is 444.  While everything seems to be in good shape, the keel looks as if it will require similar attention to yours.  Hey, IdaSailor has a really nice tiller assy.  One of the only parts in the civilized world actually available FOR that boat!  Well, yours looks great and I will follow your progress closely over the next year.  Good luck.  PS:  I wonder if they ever made them any other color?

"Regarding the winch mount for the keel not being secured; it has no reason to be."

be carefull of this comment.
actual exp. we were sailing in 15mph winds with gusts
of 40mph(recorded).
close hauled going home when the wind did a sudden shift
@ 30-40mph. over we went(twice). 1 way then the other.
that keel just bounced. support twisted almost 90 degs.
luckily i was able to straighten the board before the boat
settled back in its proper sailing position(verticle). if i hadn't
i think we would have been up the proverbial creek.

made it home with just the motor, phew.
btw, you can't sink that boat...see above.

Hi Iain,
First off, I apologize for not keep the site updated! LOL
I have several things done, just not posted yet...perhaps in a few days, I can take a few hours and get it caught up!

We have been slowed down due to various things...Mostly the heat...100 plus degree days...we have done some work at night on the weekends (still sweltering)...We have the deck hardware off, and are just about to start on the interior...

I checked your pics...and I really like the idea of the fuel compartment! I had thought a little about where I was going to put it, and I really didnt want it in the main compartment...It is simple, and easy...So, it will probablt get added to the list! THANKS!

dirty?
a bit late, but this might give you some ideas.

I am thinking the stantcion mounted in the center of the deck like that may have been used in conjunction witht some sort of roller for a downhaul on the foresail.

I have the same year and model.  Replaced the cable with 1/4" and a long shackle on the keel.  works great.

you will find every Venture has the same arrangement for the keel. Trust me it works! just looks like it does not.

If you are going to redo the fairing on the keel, you can either remove all of the old or just a large portion of it.  Use a heavy roving cloth and epoxy resin to build it back up and be generous with the resin during the final application.  Sand that smooth and paint it and you won't need fairing compound, and it will be watertight forever.
Regarding the winch mount for the keel not being secured; it has no reason to be.  Underweigh the keel still weighs the same as it does on the trailer, just doesn't move as quickly due to the water.  Those times when you have the keel paid out completely, just take enough of the slack out so that the cable is not flopping around.  If you keep the keel cable too taught it makes a really eerie sound once you get some water rushing over it.  You can always tell your crew that it's the sailing witch cautioning careless sailors when the wind gets too strong.

I see you have the boat off the trailer so my comment is late, but who knows? You may have to do it again sometime.  You can take the boat off the trailer using only the tongue jack.  First you lower the tongue all the way down and block the stern.  Second you jack the tongue up blocking and supportingthe bow when it's level.  As you jack the front up, the back goes down leaving the hull resting on the blocks.  You will have to move the front support blocks until the axle clears of course, but if you block it too far forward to begin with you can move it only once and it will end up being very close to where you want it.  Yes, you will have to duplicate the forward support as you will have to leave it on the first one until you reach the axle.  In other words, you will have two forward supports, but will end up with only one once the trailer is moved.
Other than that, looks like you have it cooking now.

If the stantion is simply mounted on the top of the deck and there is no penetration of the deck, this would lead me to believe that it was for ornamental use such as a flag pole.
If the stantion has a penetration through the deck (at the center of the stantion base) then I
would tend to believe something electical was mounted on the stantion at some point.
But, you have probably already thought of these possiblities.

Second comment.
The keel on my 1970 V-21 had cracks similar to yours.  I paniced seeing the keel break off while heeling before a strong wind.  It was not as much of a problem as I had thought.  The keel on the 1970 V-21 (The boat was picked up at the factory in December 1970) is made up of three pieces of flat  steel in the approximate shape of the keel.  The out plates are about a 1/2" smaller on all sides than the center plate.  This provides the intial contour of the edges of the fiberglassed keel.  I had the fiberglass case removed and replaced.  If I had know what I know after seeing the keel construction, I believe I would have  opened the fiberglass around the cracks and refiber glassed the area.

What you do depends on how well the fiberglass is adhering to the metal plate.

that stanchion base in the middle of the foredeck is for the support crutch for the mast when in the trailering position (down).  Same base is on my foredeck but on the port side.

Comment by: Visitor (10/15/2006 10:51:53 AM)
The stantion base in the middle of the foredeck, if it like my V-21 was the factory install support for the forward end of the mast.  On my V-21 there was a short piece of tubing inserted in the base.  On the top of the tube was a U shaped piece of  about 1'" flat stock. There were holes in the ends of the U and the mast was secured with a 5" by 3/8 bolt. (exact dimensions may not be exact)
I can send picture if you would like
